Shall I make this easy for you….. Nearly every place I have researched says that a woman while breastfeeding can eat whatever she likes and that each baby is unique and will respond with sensitivities or allergies accordingly. Just keep in mind there are many cultures out there which thrive on spicey and strong-flavored food and their children are absolutely fine.
Breastmilk is sourced from a mother’s blood stream and is not effected by food digested in the stomach or digestive track. So if you indulge in lots of…

I have to thank Dr. Dean Raffelock for turning me onto Vitex… a friend of mine has to rather abruptly stop breastfeeding and she is naturally concerned about a hormonal crash. Enter Vitex….
To summarize, Vitex agnus-castus, or chaste-tree is the small pepper-like fruits of a mediterranean shrub, and can be used as a powder, powdered extract, tea, or especially as a tincture, for many ailments resulting from hormonal imbalances. The two most important areas of application may be as a galactagogue, to stimulate mother’s milk, and as…

Ng Siong Mui wrote in The Chinese Pregnancy and Confinement Cookbook, “My confinement nanny cooked this soup for me when I complained to her that I did not have enough milk to feed my elder daughter. The very next day, my breasts opened up like a tap overflowing with milk. According to Chinese records, the sap from the papaya and protein from the fish enrich the mlk glands. Thus, drinking this soup occassionally during the breastfeeding period will fill up your natural milk reservoirs!”

I have a sweet tooth which I really shouldn’t pay too much attention to but sometimes a recipe presents itself that I just can’t ignore. This one is super easy to make (no baking), is actually very nutritional and is so delicious that you will be sneaking into the fridge all the time until it is gone (that won’t take very long). The main ingredient is lots and lots of almonds.
One teeny ounce of almonds contains 12% of your daily allowance of protein. And absolutely no cholesterol of course….

So how much alcohol have you been drinking? With my first pregnancy I think I had a much harder time saying “no,” and very often would help myself to a glass of wine. I wouldn’t ever drink more than a glass and never drank any hard spirits but most of my friends totally abstained from alcohol so of course then I felt really guilty or would start to wonder whether I had done some serious damage to my unborn child which thankfully I didn’t.
For the second pregnancy…

The whole subject of dairy during and after pregnancy really focuses on your calcium intake as your baby grows and develops strong bones and teeth. Calcium is also essential to regulate blood pressure, your heartbeat, water balance in the cells and muscle contractions. If you are not getting enough calcium, your baby will deplete your own reserves which in later life may be a cause for serious health repurcussions. So what’s a women to do if she can’t eat milk and yogurt? Or like my friend, who…

Almost as soon as Leia was born I was overcome with an extraordinary thirst. I drank literally gallons of water and was constantly requesting refils to a large jug that became a permanent fixture beside my bed. Three months later, and water is still a top priority on my weekly spend. Several times a day, I feel an unnatrual thirst come over me and then about a minute later I feel my milk drop. Nature is truly remarkable.
I know everyone harps on…

My mother used to take the carcas of a chicken and turn it into a tasty chicken soup but these days I have been cooking this golden elixir wth a whole chicken. After I got back from the hospital (and in the case of my C-section buddies while they are recovering in the hospital), chicken soup was number one on our list of desired foods. Not only did I sweat and feel warm and comforted when I drank it, but the carrots, potatoes and sweet potatoes my mother added to…

I was at a party last Friday night with my 8 week old who stuck her cute tongue out while I was chatting to a friend. “Oh I think your baby might have oral thrush,” my friend said as I somewhat anxiously peered into my daughter’s mouth. “Oral thrush!” I replied, “yuck that sounds awful. That then means I must have a yeast infection.” That night I went online to try and figure out if Leia has oral thrush. According to the…

I have just Fedexed some supplements to a friend of mine in England who tried my pot of calcium/magnesium while we were on holiday together (both of us were pregnant) and found her sleep and bowel movements improved significantly. I found the company, Sound Formulas, when I was doing research for this site. It seemed strange to me that no one was really focusing on postpartum recovery which for so many women is an extremely demanding and physically draining period. i mean, with sleep deprivation, breastfeeding,…
