Walking to stay fit and lose weight

ladiespregnantwalkc1.jpgI walked a huge amount during my pregnancy and now postpartum I have to force myself to get out the house before a day of mayhem begins. But every time I do, I immediately feel the benefits. Sometimes I walk with my daughter in the stroller but I also enjoy just being on my own. I come back feeling lovely and calm.

It’s amazing to me that with all this positive energy, I still find the hardest challenge is just pushing myself out the front door. There always seems…

Hotslings

hotslings.jpgHotslings pouches are an innovative design that combine fashion with function. Just because you are a mom (or dad) now doesn’t mean you will be stuck with bears, bunnies, blue plaid and pink gingham. Nor will you be stuck with a front pack that only is good for your baby’s first few months while it pulls mercilessly on your upper back. This sling is good for babies from newborn through to toddlers (around 35lbs). Prices start around $44.

Breasts after pregnancy

1960-61pregnantgirl158x.jpg A woman’s breasts are a subject of great mystery and beauty.  They are also a primal source of nourishment for new life. We are encouraged (mainly by the opposite sex) to show off our beauty and yet I just read about some poor woman in Houston who was breastfeeding her child in a restaurant (she had covered the baby with a blanket) and was asked to leave. It seems, we are encouraged to celebrate our femininity but not publicly supported for one of our essential roles as…

Ayurvedic cooking for postpartum mothers

sesame2.jpgI told you I would be covering other cultures and how they address the postpartum period. It’s all about recovery ladies and really should be viewed as a time to make yourself even more spectacular. 6,000-year-old Ayurvedic medical texts explain that because a woman’s psycho-physiology is in complete transition for six weeks during the postnatal period, a rare opportunity exists to reset all systems for ideal health. (The photo image is of sesame seeds).

Below is an article I found by Martha Oakes out of Boulder, Colorado. Martha is…

Pre-term labor - signs and symbols

pregnancy.jpgI have a friend who is dealing with a pregnancy scare. For the last week she was dealing with the possibilities of pre-term or premature labor including extreme fatigue and pain in her pelvic area. They are also saying she may have a bladder infection and that she should go on antibiotics. Technically speaking, preterm labor, or premature labor, is when the uterus contracts and the cervix opens earlier than normal. It usually happens between the 20th and 37th week of pregnancy. Zita West writes, “Preterm labor is found in between…

Chinese recipe to stimulate milk production

papaya.jpgNg Siong Mui wrote in The Chinese Pregnancy and Confinement Cookbook, “My confinement nanny cooked this soup for me when I complained to her that I did not have enough milk to feed my elder daughter. The very next day, my breasts opened up like a tap overflowing with milk. According to Chinese records, the sap from the papaya and protein from the fish enrich the mlk glands. Thus, drinking this soup occassionally during the breastfeeding period will fill up your natural milk reservoirs!”

Early symptoms of ovarian cancer

lotus.jpgMy mother keeps telling me to go for an ultrasound and get myself checked for ovarian cancer. She says we have a history of it in our family. I am not trying to scare anyone…. a recent article in The NY Times says, “The symptoms to watch out for are bloating, pelvic or abdominal pain, difficulty eating or feeling full quickly and feeling a frequent or urgent need to urinate. A woman who has any of those problems nearly every day for more than two or three…
