La Leche League

breastfedimages.jpgSeveral weeks before my first child was born I had a breastfeeding class that was an absolute revelation. I was rather nervous about the prospect of putting a baby to the breast. Maybe I couldn’t do it? So many stories of women who had problems, mastitis, babies rejecting their mother’s boobs, not having enough milk…. A woman from La Leche League came to talk and I remember the first thing she said. “99.9% of women can breastfeed, even women with inverted nipples can breastfeed. If you are…

A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health

prod_bk_natural_guide_125.jpgIn the West there are a few misconceptions that need to be dispelled. The first is that your body does not need to go downhill after pregnancy. The second is that the postpartum period is a genuine time for recovery and should not be neglected. A Natural Guide to Pregnancy and Postpartum Health is so helpful. It really lays out a comprehensive and clear outline for your nutritional and supplemental needs during pregnancy and postpartum. The…

Embarassing upside-down yoga experiences

yoga.jpgI am rather shy to talk about this but I am realizing it is stopping my zeal for yoga which is not a good thing. The last time after I gave birth, I rushed off to yoga at around 8-9 weeks postpartum and found every upside down inverted position became rather stressful as I came down and felt an incredible amount of air rush out of my vagina. It sounded like a fart and I really didn’t know where to put myself.

Here I am again, gearing myself…

Ergo Baby Carrier - Sling

carrierbaby3.jpgThe thing about slings is that a) it needs to be comfortable b) easy to assemble c) comfortable for baby. I bought the Ergo baby carrier because I wasn’t particularly enamored with the Baby Bjorn and I wanted something that would really support my tired shoulders. The only downside is that you can’t carry the baby facing forward, but you can carry her on your back and side and they have a special insert for newborns which during the New York winter kept my baby nice…

Maternity Bras - Bella Materna

bella-materna.jpgBella Materna’s nursing/maternity bra’s are not for everyone. I ordered one of their styles online and found it didn’t give me enough support on the side but a friend of mine loves their stuff. I also didn’t try on all their products. It’s complicated buying maternity/breastfeeding bras without being able to go into a shop and try them on. Still, their bras really are the most beautiful on the market and if you are lucky, they might work for you. They also design some interesting “transitionwear” for ladies…

Medela - The first place to go for a breastpump

pump-in-style.jpgWhen it comes to pumping and milk storage, the Medela crew have it down to a science. I have used their Pump In Style breast pump for both of my kids and it hasn’t let me down. I replaced the tubes, shields and bottles between babies and they were great at sending me the new parts.  As I mentioned in my When To Start Pumping post, the key thing to breast pumps is TIME. You just want to pump and move on with your life. The P.I.S. let’s you do…

Natural Health after Birth: The Complete Guide to Postpartum Wellness

natural-health.jpgI absolutely love Natural Health after Birth: The Complete Guide to Postpartum Wellness by Aviva Romm. She really covers so much and makes you realize you are not alone during this frequently isolating, exhausting and challenging period of your life. Peggy O’Mara, Editor and Publisher of Mothering magazine wrote : “Thirty years ago, when I had my babies, we were rediscovering natural birth and breast-feeding. But, we struggled alone during postpartum. If I had been able to…

Mamamio - Tummy Rub

truboil.jpgThe girls from London have created a really great Tummy Rub for those months of an ever expanding belly. It’s a wee bit on the expensive side so you might want to get a friend or relative to treat you, otherwise think of it as pamper therapy. It is enriched with nourishing oils to increase skin elasticity, moisturise away itchiness and hopefully prevent dreaded stretch marks.

Drinking water, filters and osmosis

water.jpg Almost as soon as Leia was born I was overcome with an extraordinary thirst. I drank literally gallons of water and was constantly requesting refils to a large jug that became a permanent fixture beside my bed. Three months later, and water is still a top priority on my weekly spend. Several times a day, I feel an unnatrual thirst come over me and then about a minute later I feel my milk drop. Nature is truly remarkable.

I know everyone harps on…
