Great supplements for postpartum recovery
I have just Fedexed some supplements to a friend of mine in England who tried my pot of calcium/magnesium while we were on holiday together (both of us were pregnant) and found her sleep and bowel movements improved significantly. I found the company, Sound Formulas, when I was doing research for this site. It seemed strange to me that no one was really focusing on postpartum recovery which for so many women is an extremely demanding and physically draining period. i mean, with sleep deprivation, breastfeeding, hormanal surges, stress and whatever else is going on in your life, why wouldn’t you want a little help? For those who don’t want to read on, click on A BOOST.
First of all I would like to tell you about my personal experience with Sound Formula’s After Baby Boost. I was introduced to Dean Raffelock and his wife Stephanie who founded the company after reading Dean’s book, “A Natural Guide To Pregnancy and Postpartum Health,” which is available in my reading materials section. Dean is a doctor of chiropractic, a diplomate in acupuncture and applied kinesiology, and a certified clinical nutritionist and everything in he said made a lot of sense to me. He seemed to passionately care about women postpartum and time and time again had witnessed women walking into his practice with health problems that could be dated back to after giving birth.
He believes women are strongly depleted and that the root cause of postpartum problems are malnutrition and nutrient depletion. In short, if they don’t “put something back” they can end up with one of the following very long but sadly accurate list of problems: depression, chronic fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, lack of confidence, loss of sex drive and passion, muscle and joint pains, unhealthy skin, hair and nails, digestive disturbances, bladder problems, heart disease, asthma, and a host of troubling emotions and moods swings.
With my own background of hyperthyroidism after my first pregnancy, I was interested to find something that could support me during this one. I started taking their supplements during my pregnancy (around month 5 or 6) when I found out from the owners that I could take a slightly reduced quantity of the postpartum supplements. The supplements included a multivit, fish oil and calcium/magnesium. From the beginning, the thing that felt most helpful was knowing I was “covering all my supplement bases” with their program, I also didn’t have any bowel movement issues and their cal/mag mix definitely helped me sleep.
Then when my baby was born, I realized quite quickly I was feeling noticeably unemotional. It was wonderful. There were a couple of times I burst into tears, but really, it was nothing like my first time. Now you might say I was more in control and experienced but I remember the last time, those tears were entirely irrational. I also felt the first time round that I could never get anything done, and that I was constantly in a “fog.” I am not saying this has disappeared, but I again, I feel more “equipped,” I have good concentration plus my skin looks great and I definitely have recovered quite quickly from labor. These day if I forget to take the supplements for a day or two, I really notice the difference.
So what’s in these wonder pills? I’ve taken this information from Sound Formula’s website… Also, in April they are coming out with a Pregnancy Formula too.
The Multi-Nutrient Formula is a complete multiple vitamin and mineral formula that contains alpha lipoic acid and CoQ10, nutrients that are left out of most multiple vitamin formulas. Alpha lipoic acid and CoQ10 are essential to running what is called the “Citric Acid Cycle”, which produces energy in your cells. Without these crucial nutrients the Citric Acid Cycle does not function properly and the body only produces two units of ATP energy per cycle instead of 36! Along with other nutrients geared especially toward recovering strength and stamina, this multiple formula will enhance the health and vitality of new and not-so-new mothers without the use of stimulants. This formula is SAFE, EFFECTIVE and BENEFICIAL for nursing and non-nursing mothers alike!
The Essential Omega-3 oils come from deep-sea fish plus anti-oxidants. These Omega-3’s are known as DHA and EPA. The human brain is about 60 percent fat and brain building requires fatty acids. New mothers are especially depleted in DHA after childbirth, which may explain why they sometimes feel “foggy headed” or “emotionally down.” Proper supplementation of these good anti-inflammatory oils in the form of DHA and EPA is beneficial for brain building, mental function, memory and restoring beneficial moods.
The Nightime Formula Promotes restful sleep with a combination of magnesium and calcium, minerals essential for not only strong bones and good muscles, but helps in making mother’s milk too. The magnesium and calcium enter the body quickly and have a calming effect on the mind, body and spirit.
If you want to learn more about this company and it’s wonderful founders, I strongly recommend you read Dr. Dean Raffelock’s book and go to their website.
