What we are looking for in a belly oil
I really like to oil up after a shower. I know it doesn’t do much to prevent stretch marks (that seems to be a wholly genetic consideration) but pregnancy really does change a mother’s body (haven’t you noticed??). Sometimes it gets really itchy and hormonal changes loosen the connective tissues so the skin can become more elastic. If the skin remains dry it can be prone to tearing which can possibly lead to stretch marks. I figure my skin deserves as much love as it can get and I think you might be interested in some of the finer products I have found on the market.
WELEDA Pregnancy Body Oil
I love these guys. Their products are fabulous and not stupidly priced. You can find their products in most natural health stores or here.
mama mio’s Tummy Rub Stretch Mark Oil
The founders of this cute company are from London but they seem to be popping up everywhere here. Their belly oil is more expensive ($30) but it has a great fragrance and I like the fact they include essential fatty acids. You can buy it online from the mama mio website and I also saw they are selling it at Pea in the Pod.
Neal’s Yard Remedies Mothers’ Massage Oil
Another beautiful oil for new mothers and mothers to be from the great London based natural remedy meisters, Neal’s Yard. Their oil combines organic soya, almond and wheatgerm oils plus a lovely neroli and mandarin fragrance.
Here’s a recipe to prevent stretch mark’s by Nutritional Healing guru, Phyllis Balch.
1/2 cup of virgin olive oil
1/4 cup of aloe vera gel
Liquid from 6 capsules vitamin E
Liquid form 4 capsules vitamin A
1. Mix together all the ingredients in a blender.
2. Pour the mixture into a jar and store it in the refrigerator
Once a day, apply the oil externally all over the absomen, hips and thighs — the places where stretch marks commonly appear. If you do this diligently, every day, you may be able to prevent stretch marks.
Cocoa butter is also a wonderful product to apply topically. This particular product is really tasty to eat too! In the summer I was mixing coconut butter with a banana and sprinkling cashnew nuts together with a few chopped black mission figs. Delicious.
